black chinos

I replaced every pair of trousers in my closet with one black chino. Here's how that went

I had five pairs of trousers I rotated through without really thinking about it. For a month, I wore one pair of black chinos instead, on purpose, to see if it actually held up.

The obvious upside: mornings got faster

No decision fatigue about which trousers matched which shirt. Black chinos go with everything I own, so the only decision left each morning was the top half.

The thing I worried about: would people notice

Nobody did, or at least nobody said anything. Different shirts, different shoes, different jackets on top did enough visual work that the same trousers underneath went completely unnoticed.

What actually tested the fabric

Roughly fifteen wears and eight washes in a month, more than any single pair usually gets. By the end, still an even black, no visible thinning at the knees or seat where friction is worst.

Would I recommend the experiment

Not owning five mediocre pairs turned out to be more useful than I expected. One genuinely well-made pair, properly cared for, did the job all five used to do — with less laundry, less decision-making, and no visible wear to show for it.
