Both are black, both go with nearly everything, and people still stand in front of the closet unsure which one to grab. Here's the actual distinction.
Fabric weight changes the formality
Chinos are a lighter, tighter weave than denim, which is exactly why they read as smarter. Jeans carry a casual association no amount of dark washing fully removes; chinos start from a more tailored place by default.
Where jeans win
Travel days, weekends, anything involving actual movement or rough wear. Denim's durability against scuffs and friction beats chino cotton in situations where the fabric is going to take a beating.
Where chinos win
Office days without a strict dress code, dinner reservations, anywhere "smart casual" is the actual instruction. Chinos clear that bar without needing a blazer to help them along the way jeans sometimes do.
The quick rule
If the day involves a desk and a meeting, chinos. If it involves a train station and a backpack, jeans. Everything in between is genuinely down to preference — both, in a deep unfaded black, cover more ground than either does in any other colour.
