A plain black t-shirt looks simple to shop for, which is exactly why so many people end up with a mediocre one. Here's what actually separates a good one from a forgettable one.
1. Fabric weight (GSM)
Below 180 GSM and a tee is usually thin enough to be semi-see-through, especially in black under bright light. 200–220 GSM is the range that holds shape without feeling heavy.
2. Fibre length, not just "cotton"
Long-staple cotton like Supima resists pilling far longer than generic short-staple cotton. The label rarely says "short-staple" outright — if it doesn't name a specific cotton type, assume standard.
3. Whether "fade-resistant" is explained or just claimed
Any listing can use the phrase. Look for an actual named process or a wash-count claim behind it.
4. Shoulder seam placement
It should sit at the edge of your shoulder in product photos, not partway down the arm — a dropped seam signals an oversized cut even when the listing says "regular fit."
5. Neckline stitching
A double-stitched neckline holds its shape through washing; a single line of stitching stretches and curls at the edges within months.
6. Logo placement, or the lack of one
A logo-free tee layers under anything without a design showing through. Worth deciding upfront whether that matters to you.
7. Care instructions that match your habits
If a tee demands cold wash and air dry to hold its colour and you know you'll tumble dry anyway, factor that into how long it'll actually last.
