A plain sweatshirt sits close to pyjamas in a lot of people's minds. Styled right, it's one of the easiest smart-casual pieces there is.
Tuck the front, just slightly
A partial front tuck into jeans breaks up the boxy shape a sweatshirt has when left completely loose. It takes five seconds and changes the entire silhouette.
Trade joggers for straight jeans
The single biggest lever here. Joggers plus a sweatshirt reads as an at-home outfit; jeans plus the same sweatshirt reads as an actual outfit someone chose on purpose.
Add a jacket, even a light one
An unstructured bomber or overshirt on top instantly adds a layer of intent. It doesn't need to be warm outside for this to work — the jacket is doing styling work, not just temperature work.
Clean, minimal, no logo
A plain black sweatshirt without branding across the chest reads as more expensive than one plastered with a logo, regardless of actual price. Minimal detailing is doing more for the outfit than people give it credit for.
