Unlike a shirt, a sweatshirt has some room for error — but not unlimited room. Here's how to actually get it right.
Regular fit, checked at the shoulder
The shoulder seam should sit right at your shoulder edge, same rule as any structured top. On a sweatshirt this is slightly more forgiving than on a shirt, but it's still the fastest way to tell if a size is right.
Why a little room is actually correct here
Unlike a fitted shirt, a sweatshirt is meant to have some ease through the body — that's what makes it comfortable to layer over and move in. True-to-size on the label already accounts for that; you're not sizing up just to get comfort, it's built in.
Sizing across M to 2XL
- True to size for the intended regular fit.
- Want the oversized crewneck look: size up exactly one.
- Layering under a jacket often: stick to true size to avoid excess bulk.
The hem test
The ribbed hem should sit at or just below the waistband of your jeans, not riding halfway up your torso. If it's constantly pulling up when you move, that's usually a sign to size up rather than a fabric issue.
