A hoodie has a reputation problem — thrown on, it can look like you gave up on the outfit entirely. Styled with a bit of intent, it's one of the most versatile pieces in a wardrobe.
Half-zipped over a collared shirt
This is the single biggest upgrade: a hoodie worn open, not fully zipped, over a shirt with the collar showing. It reads as a jacket, not loungewear, and it works over both a t-shirt and a proper collared shirt.
With chinos, not just joggers
Swapping joggers for chinos under a hoodie instantly moves the outfit from "errand run" to "smart casual." It's a small swap that changes the entire read of the outfit.
Layered under a jacket
A hoodie under a bomber or field jacket, hood tucked or left out over the collar, adds texture to an otherwise plain jacket outfit without adding bulk, especially at 400 GSM rather than something heavier.
The rule that actually matters
Fit over fabric. A hoodie that's genuinely too big everywhere reads as loungewear no matter what you pair it with. A regular fit through the body with room in the shoulders is the difference between "styled" and "comfortable, but only comfortable."
